Biodesign Hernia Grafts

The Biodesign® range of hernia grafts is used for implantation to reinforce soft tissue where weakness exists, including the repair of a hernia or body wall defect. The grafts are supplied sterile and are intended for one-time use.

Biologic technology

Biodesign grafts encompass the biological properties of porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS). SIS provides a natural scaffold that allows the body to restore itself through the complex natural process of tissue remodelling. Tissue remodelling involves the recruitment of cells, the renewal of tissue composition, and the reinforcement of structural tissue architecture.¹ As the body heals, SIS is gradually remodelled and integrated into the body, leaving behind organised tissue that provides long-term strength. 2-4

  • Tissue Remodelling: Once implanted in the body, the Biodesign source material helps the patient’s own cells infiltrate the scaffold and remodel the material into natural patient tissue.2,4,5
  • Ease-of-use: Hydrates in less than 1 minute, can be stored at room temperature and has an 18-month shelf-life. The Biodesign grafts are also thin, making them easy to suture, staple or tack and easily placed through a laparoscopic port.

Non-dermis, non-cross-linked graft

The Biodesign Hernia Grafts are non-cross-linked, non-dermis, biologic grafts that are remodelled into strong, vascularised patient tissue.2,4,5 As a non-dermis graft, the Biodesign Hernia Graft contains no meaningful amounts of elastin.6 Dermis-based biologic grafts contain high amounts of elastin and studies attribute higher rates of failure to higher elastin levels.7,8 The technology behind Biodesign Hernia Grafts has been designed to maintain strength throughout the remodelling process, so there is no need for chemical cross-linking.4 Cross-linked grafts have been associated with chronic inflammation and encapsulation.9
